India added a record 25 GW of renewable energy capacity in the fiscal year ending March 31 (2024-25), marking the highest-ever annual increase in green power capacity. This achievement represents nearly a 35% growth compared to the previous fiscal year, according to Pralhad Joshi, the Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy.
In the 2023-24 period, a total of 18.57 GW of renewable energy capacity was added, contributing significantly to the overall 25 GW increase in capacity, with solar power alone accounting for 21 GW.
"India's renewable energy sector reached a record high in capacity addition for the fiscal year 2025, installing 25 GW by the end of March 31, 2025. This marks an impressive 35% increase compared to the previous year, which saw an addition of 18.57 GW," Joshi stated. However, the pace of installation needs to accelerate significantly in order to achieve the ambitious 500 GW non-fossil capacity target by 2030.
The minister highlighted significant progress in India's renewable energy sector, noting that the country's solar module manufacturing capacity has nearly doubled, rising from approximately 38 GW in March 2024 to around 74 GW by March 2025. Additionally, the solar PV cell manufacturing capacity has almost tripled, increasing from 9 GW in March 2024 to an impressive 25 GW by the end of 2024-25.
