India Charts Roadmap to Reduce Dependence on China in Solar Manufacturing

The Government of India is taking concrete steps to strengthen domestic solar manufacturing and reduce reliance on Chinese imports. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, announced that a clear roadmap has been drawn up for the indigenous production of wafers and ingots critical components in the solar value chain.

He further stated that work is underway to prepare a similar plan for polysilicon manufacturing, another essential input for solar modules. The move aligns with India’s broader goal of building a self-reliant renewable energy ecosystem and supporting the rapid expansion of solar power capacity.

By developing local capabilities in upstream manufacturing, the government aims not only to boost energy security but also to create a stronger foundation for achieving the country’s ambitious clean energy targets.
