Biogas is an eco-friendly energy source that is becoming increasingly important in today’s Green/Renewable Energy parlance.Biofuels (including Compressed Biogas or CBG) are important components of India’s future green energy mix, as outlined in the Government’s 2018 Sustainable Alternative towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) scheme. Sustainable Biogas Systemsare being regarded as key step to promote circular economy between Municipal Solid Waste and Industrial/AgriculturalWaste Management Systems.CBG being an environment-friendly fuel with the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 98 per cent, will help support the country in minimizing dependency on fossil fuels. However, an extensive upgrading and purification process is required before biogas can be fed into the natural gas grid or used as biofuel. New and highly selective polymer-based membranes under brand name “SEPURAN® Green” from Evonik converts raw biogas simply and efficiently into highly pure biomethane. This increases yield and conserves valuable resources.
Highly selective membranes
Evonik has developed a biogas upgrading process that makes best use of the membranes' separation properties: Through skillful connection of SEPURAN® Green membranes it is possible to obtain methane with a purity level of up to 99% from the raw biogas.

SEPURAN® Green membranes have the highest CO2/CH4 selectivity and are therefore a superior technology for upgrading biogas. This selectivity of the membranes enables the production of high purity biomethane with superior methane recovery. This distinguishes the Evonik membranes technology from other traditional technologies that are available

SEPURAN® Green Membrane Technology advantage
Benefits of SEPURAN® Green membrane technology from Evonik:
Moreover, the SEPURAN®Green technology offers the purified CBG to be fed directly into Gas grid in future as it offers consistent quality of biomethane.
SEPURAN®Green technology can handle multiple feedstock options such as Agricultural waste (e.g., paddy straw), Press mud from Sugar industry, Cattle dunk, Poultry waste, Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), wastewater treatment plants and Landfill.
Current SEPURAN® Green Membrane Technology implementation in India
Currently,SEPURAN® Greentechnology has been supplied to 4 plants in India. Two of these plants are coming in Northern India whereas the other two plants in Southern parts of the country. The CBG production capacity of these plants is in range from 7 to 12 TPD. There is an ongoing discussion with more 20 companies who are considering to put CBG plant under SATAT initiative.
Biogas is produced by microbial fermentation of sustainable raw materials like corn, or from effluent sludge or liquid manure. Following separation of various minor components like water vapour, hydrogen sulphide, and particularly CO2, the biogas can then be used in the gas grid, in combined heat and power plants, and at filling stations
Biogas Plants with SEPURAN® Green
There are more than 500referencesof biomethane units worldwide in operation with SEPURAN® Green for efficient biogas processingincluding Indian Subcontinent. Six biogas generation plants, in Nepal (two) and India (four), are commissioned on SEPURAN® Green membrane technology and many more projects are in pipeline.SEPURAN® Greenmodule delivers consistently high biomethane quality with over 99% based on our 3-stage patented process. This means that almost all methane is obtained in bio natural gas quality.
