Top Indian solar maker seeks protection from China, Vietnam imports

14 Oct 2023

India's largest maker of solar modules is demanding the government restore trade barriers to protect it from competition from the likes of China and Vietnam. A temporary relaxation in the safeguard mechanism that lists approved solar manufacturers in March has led to a flood of cheap imports, forcing local manufacturers to idle some capacity, Hitesh Doshi, chairman of Waaree Energies Ltd., said in a statement. The restoration of the so-called approved list of models and manufacturers, a non-tariff barrier designed to control which solar manufacturers are allowed to enter the Indian market, is the only solution. India's solar sector has been asked to diversify its supply chains due to delays during the pandemic. The government is now trying to balance the need to curb cheap imports while promoting domestic manufacturing while also ensuring that local companies can meet demand
