The Energy Department of the Government of Odisha and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP) have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fast-tracking the state’s clean energy transition and strengthening its renewable energy ecosystem.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister and Energy Minister Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, underscoring the state’s commitment to building an equitable, resilient, and investment-ready energy future.
The strategic partnership outlines a comprehensive collaboration covering energy transition planning, grid modernisation, utility digitisation, improved renewable integration, and demand-side management to optimise electricity consumption and enhance system efficiency. A major focus of the alliance is to accelerate the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across Odisha, with GEAPP providing technical and economic feasibility support, identification of priority substations, procurement assistance, and performance monitoring frameworks.
In addition to grid and storage initiatives, the MoU commits both parties to promote renewable-led livelihood opportunities, including the solarisation of irrigation systems under PM-KUSUM, expansion of the Decentralised Energy for Women’s Economic Empowerment (DEWEE) programme, and energy efficiency upgrades for MSMEs to boost productivity and reduce costs.
The Energy Department will lead multi-stakeholder coordination, involving government entities, industry, academia, and civil society, to ensure the effective implementation of all activities. Balangir district has been selected as a model district for pilot projects and innovations under this collaboration.
Shri Singh Deo highlighted that the partnership will help translate Odisha’s clean energy ambitions into tangible outcomes by combining global technical expertise with policy support and financing pathways. He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing reliable power for all and fostering an energy transition that benefits consumers and communities alike.
This MoU represents a significant step in Odisha’s journey toward sustainable energy transformation and positions the state as a proactive leader in India’s broader clean energy goals.
