Telangana’s power distribution companies (DISCOMs) have achieved significant cost savings of approximately ₹700 crore by adopting a data-driven approach to power procurement through power exchanges.
The initiative focused on leveraging advanced analytics and real-time market intelligence to optimise electricity purchasing decisions. By strategically sourcing power from exchanges during favourable price windows, the DISCOMs were able to reduce overall procurement costs while ensuring a reliable power supply.
This approach enabled better demand forecasting and efficient utilisation of market opportunities, allowing utilities to avoid high-cost long-term procurement during peak demand periods. The strategy also enhanced operational efficiency and improved financial performance across the distribution companies.
The move reflects a growing trend among utilities in India to adopt digital tools and data analytics for smarter energy management. It also highlights the increasing importance of power exchanges in enabling cost-effective and flexible electricity procurement.
With rising demand and evolving market dynamics, such data-driven strategies are expected to play a crucial role in strengthening the financial health of DISCOMs while supporting a more efficient and resilient power sector.
