Uttar Pradesh has approved the development of a 20 MW floating solar power plant at Chilua Tal in Gorakhpur, reinforcing the state’s commitment to expanding renewable energy capacity through innovative solutions.
The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath as part of a broader push to accelerate clean energy adoption and reduce reliance on conventional power sources.
The project is expected to be implemented by Coal India Limited and will utilize approximately 80 acres of water surface. Once operational, the plant is projected to generate over 33 million units of clean electricity annually, contributing to the region’s growing energy demand.
Floating solar projects are gaining traction due to their efficient use of water bodies, reduced land requirements, and improved performance due to the natural cooling effect of water. The initiative also aligns with the state’s vision of developing solar cities, with Gorakhpur emerging as a key focus area.
This development comes at a time when Uttar Pradesh is rapidly scaling its renewable energy infrastructure, creating new opportunities for industry players, investors, and technology providers.
In this context, the upcoming PowerPax India Renewable Energy Expo 2026, scheduled to be held in Varanasi on May 02–03, 2026, is expected to play a crucial role in driving further growth. The expo will bring together solar manufacturers, EPC companies, policymakers, and investors under one roof, providing a platform to explore emerging technologies such as floating solar and foster collaborations. Registration is free.
As Uttar Pradesh continues to push forward with innovative renewable energy projects, platforms like PowerPax India Expo are set to act as key enablers in accelerating the state’s clean energy transition.
