Welspun New Energy Signs PPA with SECI for 200 MW Solar Project with 400 MWh BESS

Welspun New Energy has signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Solar Energy Corporation of India for the development of a 200 MW solar power project integrated with a 400 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), signaling a growing shift in India’s renewable energy landscape toward firm and dispatchable power solutions.

The project represents Welspun’s entry into storage-integrated renewable energy and aligns with SECI’s evolving procurement strategy, which increasingly emphasizes hybrid and round-the-clock (RTC) power supply. By combining solar generation with battery storage, the project is designed to address intermittency challenges and enable reliable power delivery beyond daylight hours.

The tariff for the project has been discovered at approximately ₹2.86/kWh, reflecting the improving commercial viability of solar-plus-storage solutions in India. The narrowing gap between standalone solar tariffs and hybrid project pricing indicates a rapid decline in battery costs and a maturing market for energy storage technologies.

Industry observers note that such projects are becoming critical as India’s solar capacity continues to expand, placing greater pressure on grid stability and peak demand management. SECI’s push for storage-linked tenders is expected to accelerate the transition toward dispatchable renewable energy, where power supply can be aligned with demand patterns.

With this agreement, Welspun New Energy strengthens its renewable portfolio while positioning itself within the emerging energy storage segment, which is expected to play a key role in India’s long-term energy transition.
