Hindalco Industries has commissioned India’s first greenfield Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate (PPT ATH) manufacturing plant at its Belagavi refinery in Karnataka, marking the beginning of domestic production of the high-value specialty alumina product. The facility has an initial annual production capacity of 30,000 tonnes and is designed for phased expansion to 60,000 tonnes, allowing the company to scale output in line with growing domestic demand.

PPT ATH is a halogen-free flame-retardant material used in Halogen-Free Flame Retardant (HFFR) cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites and paints. In cable applications, the material helps suppress flame propagation and smoke generation without releasing halogen acid gases, supporting safer electrical and infrastructure systems. The new facility is expected to address growing demand for advanced fire-safety materials driven by stricter safety standards, infrastructure development and the increasing adoption of electric vehicles.

The Phase 1 capacity of 30,000 tonnes per annum is designed to meet almost the entire domestic requirement for PPT ATH used in safer cable applications. By establishing local manufacturing capability, Hindalco aims to reduce import dependence and strengthen India’s self-reliance in critical fire-safety materials. The company has also developed the technology and research and development capabilities for the facility in-house.

The Belagavi plant is powered entirely by renewable energy sources, including biomass, solar and wind, making it the world’s only specialty alumina plant designed to operate fully on renewable energy, according to Hindalco. The company said the facility combines specialty material production with a lower-carbon manufacturing approach, supporting the development of safer and more sustainable electrical and infrastructure products.
