In a move aimed at accelerating India’s clean energy transition, the Ministry of Power (MoP) and the Ministry of Atomic Energy (MoAE) have jointly reviewed the roadmap for the country’s ambitious 100 gigawatt (GW) nuclear energy mission. The review focused on strategies to significantly expand nuclear power capacity, positioning it as a vital pillar in achieving India’s long-term energy security and climate goals.
The discussions centred around scaling up existing nuclear infrastructure, expediting the commissioning of under-construction reactors, and identifying potential sites for new nuclear projects. Officials also explored advanced reactor technologies, safety enhancements, and indigenous manufacturing capabilities to ensure the mission’s timely and cost-effective execution.
The 100 GW target underscores the government’s commitment to diversifying the energy mix, reducing carbon emissions, and ensuring round-the-clock reliable power. Nuclear energy, with its high capacity factor and low greenhouse gas footprint, is expected to play a critical role in complementing solar, wind, and hydropower in meeting India’s growing electricity demand.
The ministries emphasised close coordination between central agencies, state governments, and the private sector to overcome challenges such as financing, regulatory approvals, and technology deployment. Once implemented, the 100 GW nuclear energy mission is set to make India one of the world’s leading producers of clean, reliable, and sustainable nuclear power, bolstering both economic growth and environmental stewardship.
