Supreme Court clears government’s 20% ethanol-blended fuel plan

India’s Supreme Court has dismissed petitions challenging the government’s rollout of 20% ethanol-blended petrol, paving the way for its nationwide implementation. The court observed that the policy is in line with India’s broader clean energy goals and will help reduce reliance on imported crude oil while cutting carbon emissions.

The ethanol blending programme, which aims to achieve 20% blending by 2025, is also expected to boost domestic agriculture by creating a market for crops such as sugarcane, maize, and surplus grains. Industry experts believe the move will support energy security, improve air quality, and contribute to the country’s climate commitments.

With the apex court’s decision, oil marketing companies can accelerate the rollout of E20 fuel across states, aligning India’s transport sector with its renewable energy transition.
