Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) has inaugurated its 71 MWp DC / 52 MW AC solar power plant at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, marking a significant milestone in the company’s renewable energy journey. The project was inaugurated by Hon’ble Shri Hardeep Singh Puri, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Government of India, at the India Energy Week (IEW), in the presence of senior BPCL leadership.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Shri Sanjay Khanna, Director (Refineries) with Additional Charge of Chairman & Managing Director, BPCL; Shri Subhankar Sen, Director (Marketing); and Shri D D Sarkar, Chief General Manager (Renewable Energy).
Spread across 210 acres, the solar plant comprises approximately 1.29 lakh solar modules and utilizes 1,324 metric tonnes of structural steel along with 294 kilometres of cabling. The project is connected to the grid through a 132 kV transmission line, ensuring efficient power evacuation.
The solar facility is expected to generate around 103.61 million units of clean electricity annually. The green power produced will be supplied to BPCL’s refineries located in Mumbai, Bina, and Kochi, supporting the company’s efforts to decarbonise its operations. The project is projected to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 75,150 metric tonnes per year, equivalent to the environmental impact of planting approximately 1.25 crore trees.
The commissioning of the Prayagraj solar plant reinforces BPCL’s commitment to sustainability and clean energy adoption, aligning with India’s broader energy transition goals and the company’s long-term strategy to integrate renewable power into its core operations.
