Andhra Pradesh is set to make history with India’s first and largest 1.5 MTPA Green Ammonia project being developed by AM Green Group at Kakinada.
The project marks a major milestone in India’s energy transition, supporting the national goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070 and energy independence by 2047. It also reinforces Andhra Pradesh’s leadership in renewable energy under the Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024.
Hon’ble Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Konedala Pawan Kalyan will visit the project site on 17 January 2026. The leaders will preside over a ceremony marking the erection of the first major equipment at the facility. Senior dignitaries, industry leaders, and district officials will also be present at the event.
The green ammonia facility will produce green hydrogen through water electrolysis powered by renewable energy and convert it into green ammonia, eliminating CO₂ emissions associated with conventional ammonia production. The project is expected to achieve an annual carbon abatement of approximately 3 million tonnes of CO₂.
The project integrates 7.5 GW of renewable energy, 2 GW of pumped storage capacity, and 1,950 MW of electrolyser capacity, making it India’s largest green ammonia plant. It also enables the integration of renewable power, including power from India’s first pumped hydro storage project at Pinnapuram.
The development involves an investment exceeding USD 2 billion in plant capacity and further enables USD 8 billion in renewable energy capacity. It will revive the erstwhile Nagarjuna Fertilizers and Chemicals Limited plant. Employment generation is estimated at over 8,000 during construction and 1,500 during operations, along with indirect employment in supporting industries. The project also supports the development of ancillary industries, renewable energy infrastructure, and improved road and rail connectivity.
The project has secured India’s first long-term binding green ammonia offtake agreement with Uniper, along with further commercial agreements with Yara Clean Ammonia and Keppel. It marks India’s first large-scale green ammonia exports to Europe.
The visit and the milestone being commemorated underline Andhra Pradesh’s commitment to industrial innovation, climate responsibility, and the implementation of the state government’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy. The project is expected to catalyse further green investments, generate employment, boost state revenues, and strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s position in India’s clean energy transition.
