The Delhi government is considering offering a financial incentive of up to ₹50,000 to owners of petrol and diesel cars who choose to convert their vehicles into electric vehicles (EVs) under its proposed Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0. This incentive would apply to the first 1,000 cars that undergo the conversion, government officials said, as part of efforts to reduce air pollution in the national capital.
Unlike traditional schemes focused mainly on boosting new EV sales, this proposal aims to encourage the retrofitting of existing internal combustion engine cars by replacing their engines and drivetrain components with electric power systems, making them cleaner and more sustainable.
A draft of the new EV policy, which builds on the city’s current EV incentives, has suggested the ₹50,000 support to help make retrofitting more financially attractive for vehicle owners. The plan is still under review and would need Cabinet approval before being finalized and implemented.
Officials said the transport department is also consulting with experts and exploring long-term options to foster retrofitting as a viable way to reduce emissions without requiring owners to immediately purchase new EVs.
The broader EV Policy 2.0 is expected to include additional measures supporting the adoption of electric vehicles citywide, complementing the retrofitting incentive with other consumer benefits and infrastructure enhancements.
