Delta Electronics India, a power management and smart green solution company, has announced the successful implementation of a 6.4 MWh/4 MW Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which was inaugurated by Metro Railway Kolkata at the Central Sub-station of the Blue Line.

With this milestone, Kolkata Metro becomes India’s first underground metro railway to adopt a large-scale Battery Energy Storage System to enhance operational resilience and energy efficiency.

Niranjan Nayak, Managing Director, Delta Electronics India, said, “The deployment of our Battery Energy Storage System reflects Delta’s vision of enabling safe, resilient and energy-efficient power solutions for critical public infrastructure across India. We are proud to support Kolkata Metro while demonstrating how our energy storage solutions play a vital role in strengthening India’s urban transport infrastructure, especially by strengthening reliability in underground metro operations where uninterrupted power supply is essential.”

Integrated at the Central Sub-station of the Blue Line, the newly operational system has been designed and delivered to enhance network preparedness against grid disturbances and power related contingencies. Furthermore, it enables Kolkata Metro to draw immediate traction power support during grid failures or power interruptions, allowing passenger-carrying trains to be safely hauled to the nearest station.

Rajesh Kaushal, Vice-President, Energy Infrastructure Business Group, Delta Electronics India, added, “The fully integrated BESS combines high-efficiency power electronics with Lithium Iron Phosphate battery technology to deliver rapid response during grid disturbances. In addition to emergency traction support, the system enables peak power management, power factor improvement, driving sustained operational efficiency. All the critical components in this solution (PCS, EMS & Battery Racks) are designed, developed and manufactured inhouse within Delta giving us an edge over the design, quality, reliability and long-term sustainability of the solution for such critical applications.

The project aligns with the National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage approved by the Union Cabinet, supporting India’s broader objectives of strengthening energy storage infrastructure and advancing sustainable electric mobility across critical public transport systems.

With this inauguration, Kolkata Metro sets a benchmark for the adoption of large-scale battery storage in metro rail systems.
