Gamuda Energy has entered into a partnership with Gentari Renewables, a clean energy subsidiary of Petronas, to jointly develop around 1.5 gigawatts (GW) of solar power capacity supported by battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Malaysia. The projects are designed to supply clean and reliable electricity to hyperscale data centres, which are expected to drive significant power demand growth over the next decade. The collaboration will be implemented under Malaysia’s Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS), which enables companies to purchase renewable power directly through the national grid. This framework supports both the country’s energy transition targets and the growing needs of the digital economy. Industry forecasts suggest that hyperscale data centres in Malaysia could require more than 5 GW of dependable power by 2035, highlighting the importance of renewable projects with integrated storage. With Gentari’s experience in developing large-scale renewable assets and Gamuda’s expertise in engineering and project delivery, the initiative is expected to strengthen Malaysia’s position as a hub for green-powered digital infrastructure.Malaysia has set a target to increase its share of renewable energy in the national mix to 40% by 2040. Projects like this are seen as essential to meeting those goals, while also ensuring the country remains competitive in attracting global technology investments that prioritise access to clean energy.
