RWE Partners with Apollo for €3.2 Billion Investment to Strengthen German Power Grid

German energy giant RWE has joined forces with global investment firm Apollo Global Management to create a joint venture aimed at modernizing and expanding the country’s electricity transmission network. Apollo is set to contribute €3.2 billion to the venture, which will manage RWE’s 25.1% stake in Amprion, one of Germany’s key transmission system operators.

The joint venture will remain under RWE’s operational control and is expected to play a pivotal role in supporting Amprion’s ambitious grid expansion plan. Over the next few years, Amprion intends to invest tens of billions of euros in upgrading infrastructure across several German states, enhancing the reliability and capacity of the power network for millions of residents and industrial users.

This collaboration highlights a growing trend of private investors partnering with energy companies to accelerate infrastructure development, particularly as Germany advances its renewable energy transition. By strengthening the transmission grid, the project aims to improve integration of renewable energy sources, reduce bottlenecks, and ensure a stable, future-ready power system.

The deal is anticipated to be finalized by the end of 2025, subject to regulatory approvals, marking a significant step toward a greener and more resilient energy landscape in Germany.
