At Vedanta Aluminium, our purpose of Transforming for Good shapes everything we do, whether it is creating a future-ready workplace, safeguarding the planet, or empowering communities. Guided by a strong ESG framework and deep insights from a comprehensive double materiality assessment, we continue to align our operations with global sustainability expectations while addressing local priorities in a meaningful way.
Accelerating Decarbonisation & Clean Energy Transition
These efforts have been marked by several milestones. In FY25, we achieved an 8.96% reduction in carbon intensity since FY21, driven by clean energy adoption, operational excellence, and digitalisation. We are also accelerating efforts to source 1,500 MW of renewable power by 2030, marking a major step toward building a resilient, low-carbon aluminium industry.
In FY25, we consumed 1.57 billion units of renewable energy, the highest in India’s aluminium sector, contributing significantly to lower Scope 2 emissions. Complementing this, initiatives such as biomass co-firing and solar-powered systems that replace diesel generators are strengthening our clean energy portfolio. We are also leading the electrification of industrial mobility with India’s largest electric forklift fleet of 142 units deployed across Jharsuguda, Lanjigarh, and BALCO.
Our low-carbon aluminium brands, Restora and Restora Ultra, continue to set global benchmarks, reinforcing India’s leadership in sustainable aluminium manufacturing.
Circularity & Resource Efficiency at the Core
Circularity is central to our approach. Through our Waste-to-Wealth initiative, we have achieved 100% fly ash utilisation and recycled more than 14 million tonnes of industrial waste in FY25 alone. At BALCO, an AI-enabled Ash Control Tower is transforming waste management with real-time monitoring and enhanced fleet efficiency, showcasing how digital tools can redefine sustainability in heavy industry. Patented technologies, such as recovering high-purity graphite from spent pot liners and producing aluminium fluoride from dross slag, further demonstrate our commitment to resource recovery and responsible production.
Innovation Powering a Sustainable Future
Innovation remains one of our strongest levers for sustainability-led growth. Our unique Vedanta Lining Design (VLD) has improved potline stability and significantly reduced energy consumption at Jharsuguda and BALCO. AI-driven optimisation projects, from interconnected air systems to automated pump control, are cutting energy use, reducing breakdowns, and boosting operational reliability.
New partnerships for clean fuels, including introducing natural gas for cast house operations at Jharsuguda, are expected to reduce emissions by over 47,000 tonnes annually while supporting future capacity expansion.
Enabling India’s Green Industrial Vision
India’s aluminium industry stands at a turning point, where global competitiveness and carbon responsibility must go hand in hand. Policy support, stronger carbon markets, and rapid innovation adoption will be critical. We are collaborating with NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Mines to shape decarbonisation pathways for energy-intensive sectors aligned with India’s Net Zero 2070 vision.
Looking ahead, our priority areas include:
- Scaling water stewardship efforts to move toward Net Water Positivity
- Strengthening ESG governance aligned with global frameworks such as CSRD, CBAM and EUDR
- Accelerating digital transformation and workforce upskilling
- Deepening community partnerships in education, healthcare and livelihoods
Shaping a Responsible, Future-Ready Aluminium Industry
At Vedanta Aluminium, we remain committed to building an extensive aluminium ecosystem that is low-carbon, circular, innovative and inclusive. By combining technology, collaboration, and purpose-driven leadership, we are not only decarbonising our operations but also helping shape India’s sustainable industrial future.
