Sembcorp Industries has completed the acquisition of Indian solar power company ReNew Sun Bright through its wholly owned subsidiary, Sembcorp Green Infra, further strengthening its renewable energy portfolio in India.

ReNew Sun Bright owns and operates a 300 MW solar power project in Fatehgarh, Rajasthan, which began commercial operations in November 2021. The project operates under a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL).

The acquisition, valued at S$246 million, was funded through a combination of internal cash resources and external borrowings, Sembcorp said.

With this acquisition, Sembcorp’s total renewable energy capacity in India, including operational and under-development projects, has increased to over 7.6 GW.

According to Citi analyst Luis Hilado, the transaction moves Sembcorp closer to its ambition of reaching 25 GW of gross installed renewable capacity by 2028, a target outlined when the deal was announced in October.

Sembcorp has also set a 2028 target to reduce its carbon emissions intensity to 0.15 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per megawatt hour of electricity generated. Analyst forecasts indicate that emissions intensity is expected to decline over time, although progress remains impacted following the company’s acquisition of Alinta Energy.
