In a landmark step towards clean energy transition, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday inaugurated the state’s first green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur, marking a new chapter in sustainable industrial growth.
The facility, developed under the state’s renewable energy roadmap, is designed to produce green hydrogen using solar and other renewable sources. This eco-friendly fuel, considered the “fuel of the future,” is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions while ensuring reliable energy for both households and industries in the region.
Speaking at the inauguration, the Chief Minister said the project reflects Uttar Pradesh’s commitment to becoming a hub for clean energy investments. “Green hydrogen is the energy of tomorrow. With this plant, we are not only moving towards energy self-reliance but also ensuring cleaner air, greener industries, and new opportunities for our youth,” he noted.
The Gorakhpur unit will cater to local industrial clusters while also supplying power to residential areas through integrated systems. Officials said the project will particularly benefit sectors such as fertilizers, transport, and manufacturing, which have high energy requirements and traditionally depend on fossil fuels.
Energy experts hailed the initiative as a game-changer, as it positions Uttar Pradesh among the early adopters of green hydrogen technology in India. By reducing dependence on imported fuels, the project is also expected to strengthen energy security and attract new investments in the state’s renewable ecosystem.
With the Gorakhpur plant now operational, Uttar Pradesh joins a select group of Indian states piloting large-scale green hydrogen projects, in line with the Centre’s National Green Hydrogen Mission that envisions India as a global leader in this emerging sector.
