In a major step towards strengthening energy security and renewable energy integration, the Bihar State Power Generation Company Limited (BSPGCL) has signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with GreenCo Energies Pvt. Ltd. and Sun Petrochemicals Pvt. Ltd. for the development of large-scale pumped storage projects in the state.
The MoUs were signed in the presence of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Nitish Kumar, Hon’ble Deputy Chief Ministers Shri Samrat Choudhary and Shri Vijay Kumar Sinha, Hon’ble Energy Minister Shri Bijendra Prasad Yadav, and Hon’ble Water Resources Minister Shri Vijay Kumar Chaudhary. Senior state officials, including Chief Secretary Shri Pratyaya Amrit and senior leadership from Bihar’s power utilities, were also present at the ceremony.
The projects have been selected under Bihar’s newly implemented Pump Storage Policy–2025, aimed at enhancing grid stability, managing peak power demand, and supporting the large-scale integration of renewable energy. Both pumped storage projects are proposed in the hilly regions of Nawada district, where natural elevation differences are suitable for such infrastructure.
GreenCo Energies’ project will have an energy storage capacity of 7,308 MW, while Sun Petrochemicals’ project will add 6,973 MW, taking the combined capacity to 14,281 MW. Together, the projects are expected to attract investments of approximately ₹13,000 crore and generate employment for around 8,000 people during the construction phase.
Once operational, the projects will significantly enhance Bihar’s ability to balance intermittent renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, ensure grid stability, and meet peak electricity demand. This is expected to result in more reliable power supply and lower electricity costs for consumers across the state.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Shri Nitish Kumar said the projects would strengthen Bihar’s energy security and self-reliance, marking a major milestone in the state’s power sector development.
Energy Minister Shri Bijendra Prasad Yadav highlighted that the projects reflect the Energy Department’s commitment to providing uninterrupted and clean electricity to the people and industries of Bihar. He noted that the state has not faced electricity shortages over the past five years and emphasised that the pumped storage projects will play a critical role in meeting future demand while supporting India’s Net Zero emissions target by 2070.
The initiative underscores Bihar government’s focus on sustainable energy development, investment promotion, and employment generation, positioning the state as an emerging hub for advanced energy storage infrastructure.
