Green Job Demand in India Grows 20–30% Annually, With Tier II/III Cities Emerging as Key Hubs

India’s green economy is experiencing rapid growth, with its value projected to reach \$1 trillion by 2030 and an impressive $15 trillion by 2070, according to a report released recently. Driven by massive growth, India is poised to generate a substantial number of green jobs—approximately 7.29 million by the financial year 2027–28 and 35 million by 2047—NLB Services report stated.

Commenting on the trend, NLB Services CEO Sachin Alug noted, “Over the past 4–5 years, green jobs have transitioned from niche roles to mainstream opportunities in sectors like renewable energy, electric vehicles, and sustainable infrastructure. What’s fundamentally changed is the nature of the required skill sets.”

“Today’s green workforce must combine sustainability expertise with digital fluency, as emerging technologies like AI, IoT, blockchain, GIS, and data analytics are redefining the landscape of modern green careers,” Alug mentioned. As the green sector continues to grow, industries are not only investing in renewable technologies but also prioritising the development of a future-ready workforce to meet increasing demand.

This shift is prompting companies to rethink their hiring strategies. Instead of focusing solely on traditional degrees, employers are placing greater value on practical green skills and real-world experience. As per the report, many organisations are also partnering with colleges and universities to equip young people with sustainability-focused skills, while investing in inclusive hiring practices and reskilling initiatives.
