Gujarat Reaches 35.16 GW Milestone in Renewable Energy Capacity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a national objective to reach net-zero emissions by 2070, and Gujarat has made significant strides towards this aim by emerging as the leading state in India for the installation of renewable energy. As per the data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Gujarat boasts a total installed renewable energy capacity of 35.16 GW as of April 30, 2025. This accomplishment demonstrates the state’s robust dedication to sustainability and green development.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat holds the top position in various renewable energy segments: it ranks 1st in total installed renewable energy capacity (35.16 GW); 1st in installed wind power capacity (13.51 GW); 2nd in installed solar power capacity (19.42 GW); and 1st in rooftop solar installations (5.31 GW). Also, Gujarat contributes 15.72% of India’s total installed renewable energy capacity.

Gujarat boasts a varied renewable energy portfolio that includes wind, solar, small and large hydro, as well as bioenergy. Out of the total capacity of 35.16 GW, 13,514.68 MW is generated from wind, 19,421.8 MW from solar, 106.64 MW from small hydro, 1,990 MW from large hydro, and 129.85 MW from bioenergy sources. Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (GUVNL) is significantly contributing to the advancement of energy storage solutions and facilitating the smooth incorporation of renewable energy into the grid. GUVNL has successfully obtained contracts for battery energy storage systems (BESS) totalling a combined capacity of 1,192 MW/4,777 MWh. The state is also investigating pumped storage projects that have an estimated potential exceeding 32 GW.

A significant key innovation within this strategy is a 35 MW solar photovoltaic project accompanied by a 57 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Kutch Lignite Thermal Power Station (KLTPS). This co-located initiative enhances the current evacuation infrastructure and optimises land use to bolster solar energy deployment and grid reliability, exemplifying Gujarat’s visionary approach to clean energy.
