India Adds Record 32 GW Renewable Energy in a Year, Total Capacity Reaches 231.81 GW

As of April 30, 2025, India’s renewable energy capacity derived from non-fossil fuel sources has reached 231.81 GW, reflecting a 16% growth from the 199.86 GW reported in April 2024, as per the data released by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).

Solar energy experienced the most significant year-on-year growth, with its capacity rising by 30.7% to 107.95 GW in April 2025, compared to 82.64 GW in April 2024. Wind energy installations reached 51.06 GW, reflecting a 10.6% increase from 46.16 GW in April 2024.

The MNRE data indicates the on-going expansion of India’s renewable energy infrastructure, aligning with the nation’s climate goals and the pledge to install 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based capacity by 2030. Officials from the MNRE stated that the expansion of solar and wind energy contributes to India’s long-term goals for decarbonisation and strengthens the shift towards clean energy systems. The overall growth of 31.95 GW in the last year occurs alongside continued policy initiatives aimed at enhancing domestic manufacturing, integrating the grid, and advancing renewable project implementations throughout various states
