India’s residential rooftop solar sector is undergoing one of the fastest growth phases in its history, driven by the government’s ambitious PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. With nearly 30 lakh rooftop solar installations already completed across the country and an additional 70 lakh installations targeted over the next 10–11 months, the scheme has opened up significant opportunities for installers and solution providers nationwide.
However, analysis of the residential rooftop solar market reveals a striking contrast. While more than 20,000 registered vendors are currently active on the national rooftop solar portal, a relatively small number of organised companies have emerged as leaders in terms of execution scale, operational capabilities, and customer reach.
Leading Organised Residential Rooftop Solar Companies
| Rank | Company | Market Position |
| 1 | SolarSquare | Largest organised residential rooftop solar company by installations under PM Surya Ghar |
| 2 | Solarium Green Energy Limited | Second-largest organised residential rooftop solar company by installations |
| 3 | Freyr Energy | Third-largest organised residential rooftop solar company by installations |

Industry reports indicate that Solarium Green Energy is among the early organised players in India’s residential rooftop solar market, having executed installations for nearly six years, including during the period before the launch of PM Surya Ghar when rooftop solar adoption was primarily supported by state-level subsidy programmes such as those in Gujarat.
Market experts point out that the success of organised players is not solely determined by installation volumes. Instead, companies that have established leadership positions have built structured capabilities across multiple aspects of project execution, including:
- Subsidy application and processing
- DISCOM approvals and coordination
- Installation quality assurance
- Customer onboarding and support
- After-sales service
- Scalable project management systems
These operational strengths are becoming increasingly important as residential solar adoption expands beyond early adopters and enters the mainstream consumer market.
Interestingly, despite their market leadership, the combined installations of the top three organised residential rooftop solar companies are estimated to be only around 50,000 installations, representing roughly 1.5–2% of India’s total rooftop solar installations completed so far. This highlights the highly fragmented nature of the sector, where local and regional installers continue to account for the majority of installations.
As India’s rooftop solar market enters its next growth phase, industry observers believe companies capable of delivering consistent service quality, reliable execution, and strong customer experience across multiple geographies will be best positioned to benefit. At the same time, the market is expected to remain competitive, with thousands of local vendors continuing to play an important role in accelerating solar adoption.
With government support, declining system costs, and growing consumer awareness, rooftop solar is increasingly being viewed as a long-term energy transition opportunity. The coming years will reveal whether more organised national players emerge to challenge existing leaders or whether the current frontrunners further strengthen their positions in one of India’s fastest-growing clean energy segments.
