Reliance Power announced today that it has entered into an agreement with Green Digital Private Limited, a government-owned entity in Bhutan, to assist in the construction of the nation’s largest solar power facility. This project is expected to produce 500 megawatts (MW) of electricity and represents a significant advancement in enhancing clean energy in the region.
This initiative is a 50-50 joint venture between Reliance Power and Druk Holding & Investments (DHI), which serves as the key investment entity of the Bhutanese government. The project is projected to cost up to Rs 2,000 crore, marking it as the largest private investment to date in Bhutan’s solar energy sector.
“The significant solar investment in Bhutan underscores Reliance Group’s strategic emphasis on broadening its renewable energy portfolio while simultaneously reaffirming its enduring commitment to enhancing economic collaboration between India and Bhutan. Reliance Power boasts a total clean energy pipeline of 2.5 GWp in solar capacity and >2.5 GWhr in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), establishing it as the leading entity in India’s integrated Solar + BESS sector,” as stated by the company.
The newly established solar facility is anticipated to benefit both nations by providing Bhutan with additional clean energy and allowing it to supply electricity to neighbouring countries, including India. The power generated will be sold under a long-term contract with Green Digital, as stated by the Anil Ambani-owned organisation in an exchange filing.
Moreover, Reliance Power has already begun looking for companies to undertake the project, using a competitive bidding process to ensure high-quality execution at a cost-effective price. The company has also engaged in discussions with banks and other financial institutions to secure funding for the project, as stated in its statement.
