RIR Power Electronics Secures Global Order for Advanced Press-Pack Thyristors

Mumbai-based RIR Power Electronics Limited has secured a major international order for the supply of its high-performance 5kV silicon-controlled rectifier (SCR) thyristors, reinforcing the company’s growing presence in the global semiconductor and power electronics market.

Under the first phase of the order, the company will supply 120 units of its 125mm 5kV press-pack SCR thyristors to an overseas customer. The order is considered one of the largest of its kind and further strengthens RIR Power Electronics’ reputation as a leading Indian manufacturer of advanced semiconductor devices and energy management solutions.

Known for its innovation-driven approach, RIR Power Electronics specialises in high-current semiconductor switching devices designed for demanding heavy-power applications. Unlike conventional industrial phase-control thyristors, the company’s press-pack thyristors are engineered to handle extremely high peak currents and high di/dt pulses over short durations while maintaining superior reliability and performance.

The 125mm 5kV SCR thyristors feature a large-diameter silicon chip housed within a robust press-pack construction, offering high mechanical reliability, optimized lifetime control, and efficient current handling capabilities. These features make them suitable for critical applications across industrial electrification and power infrastructure sectors.

The order has been awarded by one of the leading Class 1 electrical EPC contractors engaged in turnkey electrification projects for industries and power plants globally. The development highlights increasing international confidence in India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and RIR Power Electronics’ vertically integrated Silicon Carbide (SiC) semiconductor portfolio.

Commenting on this recent order win, Mr. N. Ramesh Kumar, MD & CEO of RIR Power Electronics, added, “We are delighted to announce the order win from an overseas customer for 120 units of our advanced 5kV SCR thyristors, making it one of the largest single order for our range of 125mm pulse power thyristors. While order execution is slated for completion by end of 2026, we are hopeful of expanding this mandate and strengthening our partnership with many class I Electric EPC Contract companies over the foreseeable future.”

He added “With more than five decades of rich expertise in the power electronics space, RIR Power Electronics is scripting a bold new chapter with the vision of powering India’s progress through the company’s range of semiconductor solutions. Towards this end and recognising the importance of SiC semiconductors as building blocks of India’s high-power future, the company is also setting up a state-of-the-art SiC semiconductor manufacturing plant in Odisha, a significant milestone in advancing India’s semiconductor industry and strengthening domestic manufacturing capabilities. As we set about revolutionising power applications, supply contracts revitalise our spirits as we contribute towards the larger goal of establishing India as a global semiconductor hub.

Due their low thermal resistance and excellent surge current capability, RIR Power Electronics’ range of high-power large-area press-pack thyristors are well-suited for a wide range of applications such as HVDC transmission valves, Static VAR Compensators (SVC), Medium-voltage soft starters, High-power rectifiers, Crowbar protection systems, Pulsed capacitor discharge systems, High-power rectifiers, Traction & legacy locomotive systems as well as in several defense systems where huge energy bursts are required in extremely short time durations.

On a standalone basis, RIR Power Electronics Limited reported a 12.02% revenue growth for 9MFY25-26 as compared with the corresponding period in the previous financial year; with the company anticipating stronger business momentum in the upcoming quarters as it focuses on broadening its product portfolio while also expanding its global presence in the power semiconductor industry.
