Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL), a power utility supplying electricity to a population of around 9 million, has energised a record 10,466 rooftop solar installations as of April 2026. This milestone reflects the unprecedented growth in rooftop solar adoption under the company’s flagship initiative, Project ‘Suryansh’. The company’s cumulative rooftop solar capacity has now reached 160.3 MWp, reinforcing its leadership in Delhi’s clean energy transition and supporting the Government’s vision of Clean & Green Energy.

Operating under the aegis of the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, the utility has successfully energised a record 4,375 installations till date, the highest among the Delhi DISCOMs. Of the 10,466 total connections, 8,451 are residential, turning thousands of homes into self-sustaining power plants. Through Generation Based Incentives and by supplying Surplus Power back to the grid, residential consumers are not only reducing their electricity bills but also generating extra income for their families.

From 1,803 installations and 35 MWp of installed capacity in FY 2022 to achieving 10,466 installations and 160 MWp of installed capacity as of April 2026, the performance data reflects a remarkable acceleration in the adoption of rooftop solar.

FY 2025-26 emerged as the breakthrough year for rooftop solar adoption, with 5,378 new installations adding 55.75 MWp to the distributed grid, the highest annual addition in Delhi’s history. Installations under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana witnessed exponential growth, rising to 3,100 in FY 2025-26. The momentum has continued into FY 2026-27, with 394 new installations already energised in the opening month of April 2026.

The financial case for rooftop solar has also become increasingly attractive. The combined Central and State Subsidies of up to INR 1.08 lakh have significantly reduced the entry barrier, enabling consumers to recover investments within just 2-3 years. More than 50 Cooperative Group Housing Societies (CGHS) have already adopted rooftop solar, while commercial and industrial consumers account for 2,015 installations, using solar energy as a strategic hedge against rising operational costs.

“At Tata Power-DDL, we are not just distributing power, but empowering citizens to become ‘prosumers’ producers and consumers of their own clean energy. Tata Power-DDL is among the first utilities in the country to enable Peer-to-Peer (P2P) energy trading under a pilot approved by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). Through this initiative, rooftop solar consumers will be able to directly sell surplus solar power to other consumers through a secure digital platform integrated with smart meters and digital billing systems, accelerating rooftop solar adoption while enabling access to greener and competitively priced power. Crossing 10,000 connections and 160 MWp marks a significant milestone in this journey and lays a strong foundation for Delhi’s net-zero future,” said the spokesperson of Tata Power-DDL

Aligning with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy’s (MNRE) announcement to observe May 2026 as the ‘Month of Solar’, Tata Power-DDL has intensified its rooftop solar outreach and consumer engagement initiatives across North Delhi, while actively encouraging eligible consumers to adopt rooftop solar under the PMSGMBY.

Tata Power-DDL’s success has also been driven by hyperlocal consumer engagement initiatives. The company has deployed Solar Sakhis in villages and Solar Ambassadors in urban area, organised Nukkad Nataks (street plays) across neighbourhoods, set up dedicated solar camps, and launched awareness campaigns through Delhi Metro and Unipole advertisements, FM radio jingles and social media to encourage more households to transition towards clean and affordable solar energy. A real-time solar calculator, dedicated call centre and WhatsApp helpline and end-to-end digital onboarding have further ensured a seamless consumer experience among PMSGMBY beneficiaries.

Leading by example, Tata Power-DDL has also solarised 18 of its own premises, generating 2.1 MWp of captive clean energy. As India’s rooftop solar mission enters a transformative phase, Project Suryansh stands out as a replicable model that combines policy vision with effective last-mile execution, accelerating the journey towards clean, affordable, and sustainable energy for every household in Delhi.
