The Uttar Pradesh government has significantly increased its focus on clean energy, more than doubling the allocation for alternative and renewable energy in its FY 2026–27 budget. The state has earmarked ₹2,104 crore to accelerate solar, bioenergy, and emerging green hydrogen initiatives, while setting an ambitious target of adding 22 GW of renewable capacity over the next five years.
The enhanced budget signals a strong push toward energy transition and reduced dependence on conventional power sources. A substantial portion of the allocation—around ₹1,500 crore—has been dedicated to rooftop and agricultural solar programs under central and state schemes, including PM Kusum and PM Surya Ghar initiatives.
These programs are expected to boost distributed solar adoption across rural and urban areas, support farmers with solar-powered irrigation, and reduce electricity subsidy burdens on the state.
Uttar Pradesh currently has approximately 2.8 GW of installed solar capacity, and the new budget aims to accelerate project development, attract private investment, and expand solar infrastructure across multiple districts. The government is also focusing on developing several urban centers as solar cities to promote decentralized renewable energy deployment.
With the increased funding and aggressive capacity targets, Uttar Pradesh is positioning itself as a key contributor to India’s renewable energy growth while supporting rural electrification, energy security, and climate goals.
