The Bihar government has commissioned the first phase of the ₹2,800-crore Kajra Solar Power Project in Lakhisarai district, marking a significant milestone in the state’s renewable energy expansion. This initial phase features a 185 MW grid-connected solar plant integrated with a 254 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS), making it one of India’s largest operational solar-plus-storage installations.

The integrated BESS allows the facility to store excess solar energy during low-demand periods and provide 4–5 hours of uninterrupted power during peak demand or low sunlight, enhancing grid reliability and stability. A newly energized 132 kV transmission line and 100 MVA transformer have been commissioned to evacuate power efficiently into the state grid.

Officials highlighted that the project supports Bihar’s clean energy goals and reduces reliance on fossil fuel-based power sources. The second phase, currently under construction, will add 116 MW of solar capacity along with a 241 MWh BESS, bringing the total project capacity to 301 MW of solar generation and 495 MWh of storage. Full commissioning is expected by January 2027.

This development underscores Bihar’s commitment to resilient and sustainable energy infrastructure, combining large-scale solar generation with battery storage to ensure round-the-clock power supply.
