Bondada Engineering Limited, a Hyderabad-based engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company, has received a Letter of Intent (LOI) from Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited (GIPCL) for the development of a 20 MW/120 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VRFB BESS) at GIPCL’s 165 MW natural gas power plant complex in Vadodara, Gujarat. The project includes a 10-year operations and maintenance (O&M) contract.

The project marks a significant milestone in Bondada Engineering’s expansion into advanced energy storage technologies. According to the company, the project is India’s largest grid-scale Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System, further strengthening its position in the rapidly growing battery energy storage sector.

The scope of work includes the engineering, procurement and construction of the 120 MWh VRFB-based energy storage system, along with operations and maintenance for 10 years. The project is scheduled for completion within 18 months from the receipt of the Notice of Award (NOA).

Dr. Bondada Raghavendra Rao, Chairman & Managing Director Said “This project marks an important step in our expansion into advanced energy storage solutions. As India increases its renewable energy capacity, energy storage will play a key role in ensuring reliable and efficient power supply. We are pleased to work with GIPCL on this project and look forward to strengthening our capabilities in long-duration energy storage while contributing to India’s clean energy goals.”

Vanadium Redox Flow Battery technology is gaining attention for its potential in long-duration energy storage, offering the ability to store and discharge energy over extended periods. The Government of India has set a target of deploying approximately 236 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030, highlighting the scale of infrastructure development required to support the country’s energy transition.

The GIPCL project complements Bondada Engineering’s existing renewable energy EPC portfolio and reflects the company’s strategy to expand into emerging infrastructure segments. With capabilities across renewable energy, telecom infrastructure and other EPC sectors, the company is looking to participate in the development of next-generation energy infrastructure.

Building on its experience with the 100 MWh Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Energy Storage System project for NTPC Renewable Energy at Khavda, Gujarat, this new 20 MW/120 MWh project for GIPCL further strengthens Bondada Engineering’s presence in long-duration energy storage. Through these projects, the company aims to expand its capabilities in advanced energy storage technologies and contribute to the development of a more reliable, sustainable and resilient power ecosystem in India.
