IndianOil Sets Stage for India’s Largest Green Hydrogen Venture in Panipat

State-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) has determined the levelised cost of hydrogen (LCoH) for a planned 10,000-tonne-per-annum green hydrogen production unit at its Panipat refinery and petrochemical complex in Haryana, marking a significant step toward advancing India’s clean energy goals. “This milestone marks IOC’s entry into the green hydrogen sector with the launch of India’s largest green hydrogen project to date,” the company said in a statement. However, the IOC has yet to disclose the cost and other related financial details.

Scheduled for commissioning by December 2027, the green hydrogen produced will replace fossil-based hydrogen in refinery operations, leading to a significant reduction in carbon emissions. Hydrogen is a versatile fuel with wide-ranging applications, powering everything from oil refineries and steel plants to cars, trucks, trains, ships, and various industrial processes.

Green hydrogen is hydrogen gas generated by splitting water using renewable energy sources like solar, wind, or hydropower. When burnt, it produces only water, making it a clean and sustainable fuel that can be produced from a variety of sources. IOC stated that the Panipat project is fully aligned with the government’s vision for the National Green Hydrogen Mission and represents a key strategic initiative within the company’s decarbonisation roadmap.

It also represents a significant milestone in the company’s journey toward achieving its net-zero carbon emission targets, further cementing IOC’s leadership in shaping India’s sustainable energy future, the statement added.
