Germany’s energy sector has called on the federal government to accelerate its efforts on hydrogen, stressing the fuel’s importance in achieving the country’s climate and energy transition goals. Industry associations and companies highlighted that while Germany has made progress on renewable power, the pace of hydrogen infrastructure development remains slow compared to future demand projections.
Stakeholders emphasised the need for faster permitting, greater financial support, and clearer policy frameworks to attract large-scale investments in hydrogen production, transport, and storage. They noted that hydrogen is critical for decarbonising heavy industries, long-haul transport, and sectors where direct electrification is difficult.
Industry leaders also pointed out that competing global markets are advancing rapidly, with the U.S., Middle East, and parts of Asia already scaling hydrogen projects. Without stronger action, Germany risks losing its competitive edge in this emerging field.
The appeal comes as Berlin prepares new energy transition strategies, where hydrogen is expected to play a central role in ensuring security of supply and reducing emissions in line with its 2045 climate targets.
